The New Normal: the rise of E-sports

Updated: Sep 10

The esports industry has finally made its debut within the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s roster, joining its diverse array of sports events.

With the ever-growing scene of esports globally, it shouldn’t come as a surprise for enthusiasts and athletes alike to see the newly minted addition of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in the NCAA Season 100 and the upcoming inclusion of Valorant in Season 101.

The ML: BB tournament kicked off with its group stage from June 28th until July 13th, with the top 3 teams from Groups A and B advancing to the playoffs inside the SMX Convention Center on July 25th to July 27th. The top 1 from both groups received a significant advantage of a bye and immediate Upper Bracket placement.

Through a series of exciting matches, Letran Knights emerged victorious in the finals, claiming the inaugural championship title after overcoming the JRU Heavy Bombers, 3-1, with their Gold Laner, Jade Micheal Mercado, bagging the Finals MVP. Meanwhile, the Mapua Cardinals claimed the 2nd runner-up spot after succumbing to Letran in the Lower Bracket Final.

The recent dive of the NCAA into competitive gaming brings along new possibilities and ventures, which may not only bring about attention towards the MOBAs and FPS Shooter games, but also turn the spotlight towards fighting games such as the Tekken and Street Fighter franchise, or even showcase virtual sports sims such as NBA 2k , EA Sports FC, and Rennsport.

With the large number of interests in varying games among the youth, there will certainly be an abundance of talent that may stand out in the upcoming event.

Whatever the case may be, the Season 101 installment of ML: BB and Valorant in December will be a must-watch for all. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for updates as a new era of esports at the collegiate level is about to begin.
