NCAA’s First Street Dance Showdown Sets the Stage for a New Era

On December 12, 2024, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) launched its inaugural Street Dance Competition—a bold celebration of the pulse of contemporary rhythm and the spark of youthful imagination. The FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City thrummed with anticipation as it welcomed this momentous occasion during the league’s centennial season. 

In the Junior Division, the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta - Junior Dance Company rose to prominence, scoring an impressive 86.2 points to narrowly surpass the Layag Dance Alliance of Lyceum of the Philippines University - Cavite (84.2) and Indayog sa Ritmo of Jose Rizal University (82.6). Their perfect mix of power, precision, and artistry secured the ₱50,000 grand prize, a gleaming trophy, and the coveted Hawk bags. 

In the Senior Division, Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Wildstyle Crew captivated the judges with their energetic choreography and daring creativity, securing first place with 91.6 points and a ₱50,000 prize. Hot on their heels was the Saint Benilde Romançon Dance Company – Hiphop (SBRDC-HH) with 90.6 points, while Jose Rizal University Dance Troupe took third with 89 points, earning ₱30,000 and ₱20,000 respectively.

Notably, the Mapúa XDC and Mapúa Junior Dance Troupe delivered energetic performances met with roaring applause. While they didn’t secure top honors, their vibrant routines—alive with crimson and gold spirit—ignited pride for Mapúa University and set the stage for future victories.

Meanwhile, the San Beda Dance Theatre (BDT) made a powerful impact, narrowly missing the podium with a fourth-place finish and 88.9 points. Their dedication and passion, cultivated through extensive training and fueled by alumni support, deeply resonated with fans. 

More than just a competition, this historic event became a vibrant tapestry of storytelling through movement. By boldly including street dance in its centennial program, the NCAA created a bridge between tradition and innovation—welcoming fresh expressions of collegiate identity and creativity. Each troupe told stories through their steps, rhythms, and stage presence, crafting moments that both captivated the audience and paid homage to the art form itself. 

This inaugural event signals a commitment to continuous innovation. As the NCAA Street Dance Competition evolves in the coming years, it will carry the vibrant energy of its debut—poised to inspire talent, fuel school pride, and redefine the rhythm of collegiate culture in the Philippines.
